Using Google Adwords is a fantastic way to drive traffic through effective contextual ads. Unfortunately for many industries it has become extremely expensive. People are making less money through Adsense which boils down to the ads on their content pages costing less. This is in comparison with search engine marketing which is now more expensive for excellent keywords.

Using an example of mine when promoting an online gaming site, I paid on average 28c per click on the search network and 1c per click on the content network. I got over 24,500 people for 8 using the content network. To get this from the search network I calculated that I would need to pay nearly 00!! I don’t know about you but that’s a serious bargain!

How do I get on the content network? Simple. All you need to do go to “Edit Campaign Settings” in your campaign summary page and make sure that the content network is clicked in the Networks and biddings section. Here you can also choose to disable search marketing which will make Google focus on delivering your ads in the content network. Now you should be placed in the content network.

Even better, there are not even more advanced options where you can tell Google what sites you want to be showed on. This is brilliant as you can simply find the site’s that your target market most likely visits and question for your ads to be shown on them. This is fantastic for slightly off-topic ads such running a promotion for an online business opportunity and putting it on job search site. This is really simple to do as well (as with most things with Google!). Click on the campaign summary and then click on the ‘ad-group’ you have made. Hopefully now you will be able to work your way around those expensive keywords and yet still place your ads in a contextual environment. The key is to test it out. Don’t go straight down to 1c. Try 20c, then 10c and so on until you reach a point where you are paying the least you can before your traffic starts dropping off. I was lucky to go down to 1c but your niche may be different. Of course by using the content network you may not have the direct targeting of certain keywords but then again, who has that budget?

Where Google Goes, Trends Follow?

Google’s .1 billion dollar acquisition of online advertising giant DoubleClick looks set to be approved by the EU any day now, despite several news headlines lately to the contrary. But what will this merger mean for everyday small to medium businesses owners?

Expect online advertising to gain greater credibility and popularity as Google throws its brand clout behind DoubleClick’s flashier show ads. Google’s foray into pay-per-click advertising with its simple, user-friendly Google Adwords system has seen it become a major player for online advertising for small to medium enterprises. But even Google knows that Adwords doesn’t serve all business – a rounded online marketing campaign needs many hooks – and so is seeking to fill the void by tackling more sophisticated digital advertising.

The Google/Double Click merger is just the latest in a series of large online marks trying to grab a larger slice of the increasingly lucrative Internet advertising industry. Microsoft Corp bought aQuantive for billion, Yahoo Inc bought BlueLithium for 0 million and Time Warner Inc’s AOL unit bought Tacoda for an undisclosed amount.

So the larger picture? Multi-media advertising is certainly on the rise, and these brands are betting huge dollars that this boom will see everyday business owners will be investing in online advertising, like web commercials, vodcasts and podcasts.

To spread its advertising net even wider, Google is also hoping to replicate Adword’s success with Google TV ads. In Beta release in the U.S., Google has been working with the United States’ second-largest satellite operator, Dish Network, formerly Echostar, on technology that allows advertisers to see how many people are watching their adverts. Speculation is rife Google will soon expand the Google TV ads network to the UK, where Google already has a partnership with BSkyB, under which it is the satellite broadcaster’s search-and-video technology partner. BSkyB is keen to improve the targeting of advertising, and Google knows an opportunity when it sees one.

But in countries like Australia? Don’t expect Google TV ads to be in a rush to expand our way – apart from our remarkably smaller population base, we’ve been reluctant to fall for pay TV’s lure. 58.4% of all American homes have cable, whereas only 23% of Australian homes subscribe to paid TV services. So even if Google TV ads rolled out in the Asia Pacific tomorrow, their effectiveness would have to be in serious doubt.

But the message Google TV ads is touting is still a compelling one. They say the visual appeal of video commercials can help illustrate your brands ideals, clarify a complicated product or connect with buyers better than any other medium. And tracking the ROI of your ad is also vital. But the excellent news? You don’t need to hold your breath for Google TV ads to arrive Down under or pay expensive TV broadcasting fees to achieve any of those things.

There’s already a way to tick all of those boxes, and via a method that Google’s new acquisition DoubleClick already distributes. It’s web video, and it’s an affordable technology that’s becoming more accessible by the second as broadband users increase. It’s the cheapest way to get a video commercial to the masses, and until Google TV arrives here it’s probably your most viable way of rounding out your online presence with minimal fuss.
